Drone flights in the DMV area have many FAA restrictions and obstacles. If you are considering drone footage, please read below, plan ahead and remember - flexibility is key.
The DC FRZ is based on distances from DC Reagan Intl airport (DCA) as shown in the picture below. Drone operations within the 7 mile (RED) ring cannot be performed (unless supporting a government agency). Operations between 7 miles and 15 miles (DOTTED DARK BLUE) can be done by me but require FAA/TSA approval. Operations between the 15 mile and 30 mile (PURPLE) ring can be done both day and night without the need for added approvals.
As an FAA Part 107 certified drone pilot, I am able to operate with the 7 to 15 mile band encircling Washington DC. However, FRZ flight approval requires govt. coordination and paperwork. Any requests for drone operations within this band will be a discussion between us on how I can make this happen and what I need from you.
Additionally, once approved, FAA/TSA can revoke a clearance for presidential flights or other conflicts. While this does not usually happen, it is important to know and to be flexible and understanding. Back-up dates (depending on the event) can help.
Finally, weather is a big factor with drone operations. Drone operations can be limited due to excessive winds or poor weather.
Bottom line is that I will work with you to the best of my ability to accomplish all desired drone operations.
